Tax Audit Due Date Extension: Will CBDT Push the 30 September 2026 Deadline?

Where things stand right now

As of 19 September 2026, no CBDT notification or circular extending the tax audit report deadline for AY 2026-27 has been issued. The statutory due date under Section 44AB of the Income-tax Act remains 30 September 2026 for taxpayers whose accounts require a tax audit. Unless the Board acts in the coming days, this date stays operative and businesses, professionals, and their auditors should plan accordingly.

Who this affects

The tax audit requirement applies broadly to businesses whose turnover exceeds the prescribed threshold and to professionals whose gross receipts cross the specified limit, along with certain other categories covered under presumptive taxation provisions. For all of them, the tax audit report (typically Form 3CA/3CB and 3CD) must be uploaded by the auditor and accepted by the assessee on the income tax portal before the deadline. The income tax return for these audit cases generally follows about a month later, so a delay at the audit stage has a knock-on effect on ITR filing too.

Why an extension is being sought

Chartered accountant associations across the country have formally represented to the CBDT asking for the deadline to be pushed to 31 October 2026. One such representation, dated 6 September 2026 from the Chartered Accountants Association, Jalandhar, was addressed to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Minister of State for Finance, the Revenue Secretary, and the CBDT Chairman, citing the compressed compliance window, portal load during peak filing days, and the volume of audits that fall due in the same period as GST annual returns and other year-end filings.

The precedent that fuels the expectation

This isn’t a new ask. In the previous cycle, the tax audit deadline for AY 2025-26 was extended from 30 September 2025 to 31 October 2025. That pattern, a near-deadline extension announced in the final days of September, has repeated often enough that many practitioners are structuring their workflows around the possibility, even while treating 30 September as the binding date until an official notification says otherwise.

What happens if the deadline isn’t extended

Missing the tax audit deadline attracts a penalty under Section 271B, generally 0.5% of total sales, turnover, or gross receipts, subject to a maximum of Rs 1,50,000, unless reasonable cause is demonstrated. Beyond the monetary penalty, a delayed audit report pushes back the ITR filing timeline for the same entity, which can affect carry-forward of losses and other time-sensitive elections.

What businesses should do now

Treat 30 September 2026 as the real deadline until a CBDT circular says otherwise. Finalise books, complete reconciliations (particularly GST-to-books matching, given the ITC and turnover cross-checks auditors now perform), and get your Form 3CD data ready for your auditor well before the last few days, when portal traffic typically peaks. If an extension is announced, it will apply automatically, there is no separate application to file for it.

Keep watching this space

We are tracking the CBDT’s response to these representations and will update this space the moment an official notification is issued, extension or otherwise.
