What Is GSTR-9 and Who Must File It
GSTR-9 is the annual GST return that consolidates the outward supplies, inward supplies, input tax credit, and tax paid reported across your GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings for the year. Regular taxpayers registered under GST are required to file it, with simplified relaxations available for smaller taxpayers below the prescribed turnover threshold.
The Due Date for FY 2025-26
The GSTR-9 annual return for FY 2025-26 is due on 31 December 2026. That may feel far off, but the return draws on a full year of monthly and quarterly filings, so reconciliation work is best spread out rather than left to the final quarter.
The New Rule: Missed Filing Blocks Future Returns
A significant change applies from FY 2025-26 onward: if GSTR-9 is not filed by 31 December 2026, the GST portal will block filing of GSTR-3B for January 2027 and every subsequent month until the annual return is submitted. This is a meaningful shift from earlier years, where a delayed GSTR-9 mainly meant a late fee. Now it can stall your regular monthly compliance entirely.
Late Fees for Delayed Filing
Beyond the blocking rule, late filing of GSTR-9 attracts a late fee of Rs. 200 per day (Rs. 100 under CGST and Rs. 100 under SGST), subject to a cap of 0.25% of turnover in the relevant state or Union Territory. These fees accrue daily, so delays add up quickly.
What to Reconcile Before You File
Before filing, reconcile your GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B figures against your books, cross-check input tax credit claimed against GSTR-2B, verify HSN-wise summary details, and confirm that any amendments made during the year have flowed through correctly. Discrepancies found late are harder to explain and correct.
Plan Ahead, Not in December
Given the new consequence of a blocked GSTR-3B, it makes sense to begin reconciliation well before the year-end rush. Reach out to us early so we can review your filings through the year and have GSTR-9 ready well ahead of 31 December 2026.
